Position Description

Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with PhD studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

About the Department and/or College

The Humanities Center at Texas Tech University invites applications for its Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Humanities, to be held over the 2024-2025 academic year, beginning on September 1, 2024. This fellowship is open to all recent PhDs across humanities disciplines, but the Center will prioritize applicants whose work complements our recent scholarly emphases and research strengths, including social justice, environmental studies, anti-racism, and public health. Priority will also be given to scholars whose work contributes to the Humanities Center's scholarly programming theme for 2024-2025, "Celebrating Indigenous Resilience and Cultural Survival: Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Red River War." We are also interested in receiving applications from scholars whose work might contribute to the institutional strategic research themes identified by TTU's Office of Research and Innovation. Major/Essential Functions

The visiting fellow will be expected to:

  • work in residence on the TTU Lubbock campus on a full-time basis during the award tenure;
  • prepare and deliver to the TTU community a 45 minute public talk on their research in the Spring 2024;
  • attend Humanities Center events, including public talks and receptions, during the tenure of the award.
The Fellow will be provided with an office and computer at the Humanities Center and full library privileges, including access to special collections. Housing is not included, but the Humanities Center can assist with finding it if requested. The Center's visiting scholar will be paired with two faculty mentors at Texas Tech: one directly aligned with the Fellow's field of research study, and a second at-large mentor available for broad consultation about the academic profession. This fellowship is primarily intended to support new research in the humanities, and as such, the fellow will have no assigned teaching with this position.

Required Qualifications

PhD in area of project specialization. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctoral degree. Scholars in any humanities field are welcome to apply, but special consideration will be given to applicants who plan to use libraries, archives, and other resources at Texas Tech and/or the Lubbock area. The selected Fellow must hold the Ph.D. by the start of the award but must not have earned the degree before 2020. The Center will also prioritize scholars with experience working in under-represented communities and/or with topics specific to the challenges faced by under-represented communities, in line with one of the goals of the Texas Tech Strategic Plan: "Advance and sustain a campus climate and culture characterized by accessibility, inclusiveness, and high academic quality."

  2. A narrative of no more than 1000 words describing your project, and how, specifically, you propose to use our resources if selected for the Fellowship.
    • This narrative should include a description of how the applicant's experiences working in underrepresented communities and/or with topics specific to the challenges faced by under-represented communities and/or with topics specific to the challenges faced by under-represented communities will contribute to the project and the opportunity.
  3. A C.V. of no more than 3 pages with an emphasis on work showing your suitability for undertaking the project you propose.
  4. A scholarly writing sample of 20-25 pages.
  5. The names and contact information of three people whom we may contact for recommendations.
  6. Brief descriptions of their work/ discipline and relationship to the candidate would be appreciated.
